Robert Shook: Advancing Excellence in Manufacturing and Operational Engineering

Robert Shook

Robert Shook

Robert Shook serves as a pivotal force behind Woodward’s operational transformation, combining deep engineering expertise with strategic vision to elevate manufacturing performance across aerospace and industrial markets. As director of engineering and operations, he brings over three decades of experience to the forefront, advancing Lean systems, integrating smart technologies and building empowered teams capable of meeting today’s most complex production demands.

Modernizing Aerospace and Industrial Manufacturing for a Smarter Future

Robert Shook began his career in advanced process engineering, mastering techniques in composite materials, superplastic forming and precision tooling. His early work on high-profile aerospace programs like the B-2, F-14 and Boeing 747 set the foundation for a career focused on complex problem-solving and continuous improvement.

At Lockheed Martin, he co-designed a PAC-3 missile assembly facility that reduced cycle time by 83 percent and improved lead times through supplier Kaizens and SPC implementation. His later work at Airstream and Thor Industries marked a dramatic shift in quality and financial performance, achieving a 65 percent reduction in warranty costs and turning negative earnings before, interest and taxes, into double-digit margins.

Shook also held senior leadership roles at Collins Aerospace, where he turned around underperforming divisions, introduced realtime cost analytics and built continuous improvement frameworks that remain in place today.

At Woodward, he brings this deep experience to highly specialized and regulated manufacturing environments. His leadership has driven the modernization of facility operations through digitization, robotics and the integration of statistical quality systems, ensuring compliance industrial standards.

Driving Operational Excellence at Woodward

Robert Shook plays a pivotal role in advancing engineering and operational capabilities across the organization. As a senior leader focused on performance improvement and manufacturing optimization, he has led key initiatives that have streamlined processes, reduced waste and elevated production reliability in aerospace and industrial systems.

One of Shook’s most notable contributions has been his leadership in standardizing quality systems and deploying statistical methodologies that align cross-functional teams. Under his guidance, Woodward has seen a measurable increase in yield, reduced variation in complex manufacturing environments and enhanced root-cause problem solving. By embedding continuous improvement into daily operations, Shook has helped foster a culture where quality and efficiency are seen as shared responsibilities across engineering, supply chain and production.

His technical background and process rigor have enabled him to guide teams through challenging transitions, including new product introductions and design-to-manufacture handoffs. From implementing advanced SPC tools to driving enterprise-wide adoption of design of experiments, Shook has elevated Woodward’s approach to data-driven decision-making. These efforts have improved product performance and enhanced collaboration between design engineers and manufacturing teams.
