FREMONT, CA: AWS today unveiled two new automotive efforts at its annual re: Invent conference. One is AWS FleetWise, a new service that helps automakers gather sensor and telemetry data from their fleets. Like AWS' other sector solutions like AWS for Industrial, AWS Automotive is an industry-specific endeavor that brings together a variety of the company's products.
Sensor data collection isn't new for automobiles. But FleetWise offers an end-to-end system with plenty of options. We don't know whether they want to filter data locally, or just collect data from select sensors like engine temperature, or get all of it. Each automaker must select what data they need. To get started with FleetWise, a manufacturer must first characterize and model the vehicle and its sensors using the open-source Vehicle Signal Specification, which many automakers have already accepted.

AWS then supplies the automakers with the source code to gather data from FleetWise. Once this code is built into the vehicle gateway, engineers may start developing data collection campaigns to harvest data from the actual vehicle fleet. “The possibilities with data collecting initiatives are unlimited, and we are pushing the envelope,” Tzamaloukas said. With a considerably greater signal-to-noise ratio, we intend to provide manufacturers access to the terabytes of data created by all the various automobiles out there.
Tzamaloukas anticipates FleetWise to be broadly accessible in 2022 and available in automobiles by 2024. He noted that while some of this data may remain in the automakers' backends, some may be made available to drivers, perhaps in the form of monthly vehicle health reports.
Dean Phillips, the initiative's lead, told me AWS for Automotive is a method to define AWS' capabilities for the sector. “We're enthusiastic about AWS for Automotive because it helps our clients understand the many AWS solutions,” he added. These solutions range from cutting-edge autonomous mobility services to product engineering assistance, supply chain monitoring, and digital consumer interaction systems that automakers may embrace as required.
