● Long-term molding success depends largely on the design of the parts. It is not a good idea to quickly approve a plastic part design only to find out later that it is plagued with features that will not work with injection molding. Design creativity comes from minds that can offer attractive solutions considering manufacturing limitations. The best results can be achieved when the part designer, mold maker, and injection molder work together.
● Effective risk management, communication, and realistic timelines are essential to success in production. Planning for potential issues and budgeting for them during the planning stage will help the project stay on schedule and within budget.
● Cost savings on tooling should be considered carefully. Savings won't be worthwhile if it compromises the ability to maintain the mold, has the potential to affect part quality, or complicates startup and daily production. In addition, tooling savings will be dwarfed by the cost of scrap, drain on resources, lost time, and repair activities, so consider carefully how cost savings can impact overall efficiency.
● Review the mold design carefully. Now is the time to get it right before it's too late. Mold filling, cooling, and ejection should be considered. Simulation data and documented prior experience should be used to justify most decisions. Be sure the part can be removed without damage during ejection by asking why it would remain on the tool's ejection side in every cycle.
● Streamline mold features to save time and money. For example, provide the mold maker with clamp slots, lift bars, and connection sizes standards. Also, you must offer location preferences for utilities such as air, water, oil, and electric. Otherwise, the mold might need to be replumbed when it arrives or if it is moved to another machine.
● Before a new tool arrives, check with the shop floor and quality groups. Ensure that your team has everything they need to hang the mold and measure the parts efficiently. We must review the number of ports on water manifolds, the availability of controllers for hot runners and coolant, heater cables and plugs, fittings, hoses, bolts, lifting straps, etc.
