The type and technique of forging depends on the tools the blacksmith has at his disposal. Hammering techniques can be used by any blacksmith with simply a few simple tools, but more advanced techniques, like die forging, require industrial equipment. Here are some of the basics and applications of equipment-based forging techniques.
Hammer Forging
Today, many professional and hobbyist blacksmiths still practice hammer forging. Hammer and anvil are the only tools needed for this method. The tools used in blacksmithing have become synonymous with the craft. For entry-level blacksmiths, hammer forging is also an ideal method since they are affordable. Blacksmiths can also learn hammering techniques and endless types of hammers through hammering.
Modern technology and automation are being used by some professional smiths and manufacturers to power this process. Modern hammering techniques include gravity drop and power drop.
Gravity drop hammers: Hammer rams are connected to belts, chains, boards, and pistons to create several types of dropping systems. Hammers are accelerated by gravity when they are lifted and dropped, adding additional force to their blows.
Power drop hammers: The motion of a power drop hammer is powered by steam, cold air, or hot air pressure. In turn, the hammering ram gets more force behind its acceleration and drop, which results in stronger hammering motions.
Press Forging
Using a press is another equipment-based blacksmithing process. Forging and manufacturing presses come in two main types: mechanical and hydraulic. It forms solid shapes by continuously squeezing metal down. To operate a mechanical press, a toggle and a hand crank are used. It is more common to use hydraulic presses in manufacturing applications, though some professional craftsmen might also use them. Material is bent and shaped using hydraulic presses. The majority of hydraulic presses are automated, which means they perform repeated forging operations with the help of power and software.
Temp-Based Forging
Temperature is another factor that affects forging outside of the equipment you use. Temperature can have a significant impact on the forging process and final product. By learning temperature-based forging methods, blacksmiths can control the temperature of the workpieces they are forging.
Cold Forging
In cold forging, a material is worked at room temperature. Aluminum, tin, lead, and copper are ideal materials for this method. It is possible to forge these metals without affecting their temperature, due to their soft and malleable nature. Blacksmiths can learn cold forging by using anvils, hammers, clamps, and soft metals. Cold forging is a good practice tool for beginners.
Warm Forging
Blacksmiths use warm forging to change the properties of metals by heating them. As a good example, blacksmiths use 700 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit for heating steel during warm forging. This temperature allows a smith to work with metals other than the softer varieties, such as steel and harder alloys. Stronger materials and higher production rates also benefit.
