Recently, Signature Blasting Services completed a project that required a solution for a never-done-before challenge. This project’s scope was to perform abrasive blasting on a turbine rotor and 13 stages of diaphragms for a general electric (GE) steam unit. When it arrived on the scheduled start date for the operation, the customer informed them that they had not foreseen the issue where it had to perform the blasting operations on the rotor located on the back of a semi-trailer. Though this may not seem like a particularly difficult task, the situation posed the challenge of containing the abrasive within the tent and coming up with a solution that enables rotor blasting without making an abrasive mess everywhere.
In this case, Signature Blasting Services’ crew set up the blasting tent around the rotor on the semi-trailer’s back, while the scaffolding crew built the tent structure with platforms around the trailer and over the rotor. After accomplishing this, the next task was to keep the tent suction in a negative pressure to ensure all abrasive dust goes into a containment bag called a ‘dust sock’. This required lining the entire blast tent with plastic sheets to ensure no openings existed for sand to get out. Above all, it completed the job and kept the containment to a minimum, while the customer appreciated the team’s ability to adhere to the project schedule and devise a solution on the spot.
